Where to Stay in Akiu Onsen

Most onsen towns will tell you a lord once visited. Akiu can do better than that, and it is the reason this is the strongest single recommendation in the guide. It sits about half an hour west of Sendai in a river gorge, which makes it unusually easy to reach for somewhere that feels remote. Eight properties are bookable in English.
The connection
Akiu held the Sendai domain's bathing villa during the Edo period, and is counted among the three imperial waters as Natori no Miyu. The inn Sakan served the Date family, and still displays a main house it received from Date Masamune himself — now an exhibition room rather than a guest wing. That is a rarer thing than it sounds. Most "the lord stayed here" claims are legend attached to a building that postdates the lord by two centuries. Here the object is in the building and the building is still an inn. Search for it as Sendai Akiu Hot Spring Hotel Sakan — Rakuten's English listing name. Searching "Sakan" returns nothing.
One correction to the usual telling: Sakan is often described as the Date family's hereditary "bath keeper". We could not confirm that term in any source. What is documented is the bathing villa and the main house received from Masamune, which is enough.
Getting there, and when
Bus or taxi from Sendai station, or a short drive. Pairs naturally with Matsushima and the Date sites in the city — Zuihoden, the castle ruins, Osaki Hachimangu — so two nights here covers the whole Date itinerary without moving base.

Sendai Akiu Onsen Hotel Zuihofrom $293The safe large-hotel choice, and the best-evidenced score in the valley — 4.4 across 437 reviews. Buffet dinner and breakfast, which suits a family or a first visit better than a formal kaiseki.
Sendai Akiu Hot Spring Hotel Sakanfrom $378The one with the history, and the only inn here you can reach without a car — a hotel shuttle runs from Sendai Station. Dinner and breakfast included.
